Welcome to Warwick! (Alexis Lavallee) Warwick, located in Kent County, is the second biggest city in Rhode Island following Providence. It is home to 82,672 residents. The city also holds a major airport called T.F. Green. Warwick is home to three public high schools, including: Pilgrim High School, Toll Gate High School, and Warwick Veterans Memorial High School. Only minutes away from the busy city of Providence, Warwick offers a variety of unique restaurants and attractions, including the Warwick Mall. It’s even the site of many historic events such as the infamous Gaspee Affair which occurred in present day Pawtuxet Village. During the summer, locals spend much of their time at Oakland Beach, home to Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House, a popular attraction for both tourists and residents. This report will discuss statistics regarding Warwick’s diversity, income and education.
Income Poverty: Warwick is a relatively poor city compared to Rhode Island and the United States. The median household income for a family in the city is $46,483, compared to the Rhode Island average ($54,891) and the median national household income ($53,657). The average family income in Warwick ($56,225) is in poor contrast to the Rhode Island average family income ($71,212). Warwick also falls well below the national average family income ($65,910). Despite this, only 5.9% of the population falls below the poverty line. Another positive is that is that Warwick’s child poverty rate is less than half the state rate of 19.5%, leaving Warwick with a rate of 8.4%. Though the numbers look good, it does not change the fact that there are approximately 1,300 children living in poverty in Warwick. (Ellie Beargeon)
Ethnic Diversity: There is a wide variety of diversity among the two communities in Warwick. Females make up 52.8% of the population, while males make up 47.2%. Also, a majority of the town with 92.57% is white with a merely 1.62% black population. Concerning all of Rhode Island, 80.69% of the population is white, and 71.71% of the United States is white. Typically, Hispanic, Native American, and Black children are more likely to live in poverty than White and Asian children. (Emily)
Education Indicators: (Emma Bychok) Warwick gives a very good representation of education indicators for Rhode Island. There is a slightly lower rate of children who are abused in Warwick compared to the state. In 2014 there were 154 Warwick children who were victims of child abuse and neglect, a rate of 9.7 victims per 1,000 children ages birth to 18 in comparison to the state rate of 14.5 victims per 1,000 children. The chronic absence rate is also lower than the state rate as well, being at (23%) compared to the state rate of (24%). In addition, (79%) of Warwick high school students graduated from school in 2014, which is only slightly lower than the state rate of (81%). Overall, Warwick provides a fair representation of education programs for the state of Rhode Island.
Children Statistics (Taylor Lawson): Warwick is a city that varies in economic standing. Approximately (23%) of children are living in in single parent homes, and have a very high advantage due to the fact that approximately (46%) of all Warwick mothers have completed college and have received a Bachelor’s degree. However, the percentage of poverty has significantly increased since 2000, from about (6.7%) to a current average of about (34%) of children living in poverty. An estimated (1,260) Warwick children lived in poverty during 2009-2013. By 2014, the average cost of two-bedroom apartments in Warwick was about ($136) more than the average in Rhode Island; and in 2014 Warwick public schools claimed that around (74) children were homeless, however (258) children in the city of Warwick are receiving cash assistance. A low (18%) of students in Warwick are participating in school breakfast which is provided by the school, however this does not mean that they are not in fact eating at home before the school day starts. Most children under 18 are receiving health insurance, except for (3.3%). About (136) children were reported to have incarcerated parents, and in 2014 (154) children were victims of child abuse. Warwick is a city with very few bad statistics, and for the most part is a very safe and educational place to live.
Conclusion: (All) In conclusion, there is good and bad about any city. Warwick has a lower than average child poverty rate, and a higher than average graduation rate. However, the household incomes, and median family incomes, are far lower than the national and Rhode Island state averages for incomes. It will be interesting to further research both the public and charter schools of Warwick and see the impact the community has on them.
